Berwick-upon-Tweed

A cold and bright winter wander in this historic Northumbrian town

Some photographs from Berwick-upon-Tweed, mid-January. Berwick cockles are not a type of shellfish as I expected, but a kind of sweet which was made from 1801. William Cowe and Sons, who made them, had two shops in Berwick-upon-Tweed until their business closed in 2010. In the window of their old wholesale department building, there are still some discarded tins which presumably once contained their sweets.
