At the beginning of October I joined a photo walk around Leith, which was organised by Laurens Willis and timed to coincide with Holga Week 2026.
Of course, I took these photos with my Holga 120N and a couple of rolls of Kodak Gold. The first few photos were taken around Linksview House and Cables Wynd House, two examples of brutalist residential architecture, both built in the 1960s. Cables Wynd House is also known locally as the 'banana flats' due to its curved footprint, and was famously featured in Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh as the childhood home of one of its main characters.
Leith is an area full of contrasts - and rich with history - which makes it a particularly interesting place to photograph. If you had asked me 10-15 years ago if I thought I might live here one day, I probably wouldn't have said 'yes'. But life has a funny way of leading you in unexpected directions, if you let it. And I've come to love living around here. Despite my tendency to omit people from my photos, Leith has a vibrant social community and creative scene, and we often spend our weekends wandering in the local area, browsing the shops on Leith Walk, visiting our favourite cafés and cake shops, walking by the Water of Leith or down to the Shore. It'll never be my hometown, but I'm glad I can call it my home.
