Exhibition: Portrait Exchange

A new exhibition in the staff area at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

A friend and colleague of mine, Emma Griffin, organised a mini-exhibition in the staff area at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, where I work part-time as a Gallery Attendant.

Five artists were randomly paired and made portraits of each other in their chosen medium. The idea was inspired by a picture of Barbara Hepworth, painted by Ethel Walker c.1920, which was displayed in the recent exhibition Barbara Hepworth: Art & Life at the Gallery of Modern Art, where we all work.

I made a portrait of my colleague Cameron standing by the entrance to the Modern Two gallery. In contrast, he made a surrealist-inspired photomontage featuring me walking over the lawn outside the gallery.

Emma Griffin, Rachel Howarth and Olga Pypno also painted portraits of each other for the exhibition. This is an unofficial, informal mini-exhibition in the staff area at the gallery, so unfortunately it won't be open to the public. However, many of my NGS colleagues (including me) will have their artworks featured separately in an upcoming exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Details of that will be coming soon!
