Around Newhaven

A few photos from a walk up to Newhaven Harbour, on the northern edge of the city, between Leith and Trinity. This is an interesting area which combines history and industry between residential buildings, with a few shops and cafés here and there, a harbour and lighthouse which was once a busy fishing port (and now continues the tradition with one of the best fish and chips restaurants in town), an artists' studio hub at the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (shown in the first photo, above), a huge grain mill (second and third photos), and the end of the tram line that runs all the way through the city centre and out the other side to the airport. There is also a good network of foot/cycle paths around north Edinburgh - leading to Newhaven, Trinity and Leith - which were formerly part of a local rail network (RIP). In some places you can see the old train stations and platforms, which I've photographed and featured on this blog in the past.

This January marks 6 years since we moved to Edinburgh, and we've lived on this side of town for all of that time. Without really realising it, I suppose I feel like a local resident now - I know my way around a lot of these streets, I have my favourite spots, and this little corner of the city is somewhere I've been with my camera on many occasions. I'll probably never know this area like someone who was born and grew up here, but I don't feel as much like a newcomer any more.
